Nick J.D. Hodgson live review

Nick J.D. Hodgson is most well known for being the original drummer and songwriter for Kaiser Chiefs and after 5 years away from the stage, he has returned with his own band and a collection of feel-good, uplifting tunes.

This was an intimate gig at our beloved Deaf Institute, where the audience were made to feel at home immediately as Nick’s warm personality emanated into the crowd, putting a smile on every face. It was clear from the first song, I Love The Way Your Mind Works, that we were going to be treated to an evening of outstanding song writing and excellent musicianship. Each song was layered with harmonious, well-crafted melodies, expertly performed by Nick and his highly accomplished band. Nick’s powerful and easy-going voice was backed by his band members with intricate harmonies that resonated beautifully round the room in songs like RSVP and Suitable.

This is gentle, boppy indie at it’s very finest! With hints of the 70's and shades of country, Nick has created a unique set of songs with universal appeal. Throughout, the audience were intoxicated by the infectious performance of Nick and his band. These were all new songs to me but felt like familiar friends. Clearly, Nick has spent a lot of time and thought in creating his first solo album; lyrically strong, it has a very personal feel that I think reveals a lot about him and what inspires him. But how could he not throw in a couple of Kaiser Chiefs songs? Oh My God has never sounded so good! Between each song, he rambled and chatted to the audience and after the set, he stayed to talk to everyone and sign their records- what a star!

If you’ve not seen Nick or heard his album, I would highly recommend you do.
